Art is everything. It is impossible to look anywhere in this world and not see an artist's creation or some aspect of art. It allows everybody to express himself or herself. Without art, the world would be without color, design, literature, music, poetry, dance, and everything.
One of the biggest deficiencies of Turkish is the importance not given art. Even in Ankara or Istanbul, the number of people who is in theatre is not more than the number of my fingers. Ataturk says “A nation without art has lost one of its lifelines.” He explicitly states the importance of art.
How much are we sensible towards the students who are prone to art? Actually, we accept music, theatre, poem, and dance as a waste of time. Today, in our schools, art classes are accepted as idle classes. In these lessons, students talk to each other, study other lessons like Math, Physics or Literature, surfs on the Internet. In short, they can do whatever they want except the things related to art. In some schools, if you have crayons and drawing paper or block flute, the teacher will give you 100 points. I wonder why the lessons related to the left hemisphere of the brain are very valuable unlike the others like art or sport. I think the curriculum ignores the most significant thing: functions of art.
Art provides opportunities for self-expression, develops independence and collaboration. In this process, it improves academic achievement such as enhancing test scores, attitudes, social skills, critical and creative thinking etc.
The only language which is acceptable all around the world is “Descently", and the most important lesson of humanely education is ART.
